Case Study: GeelongPort
GeelongPort: Certified Carbon Neutral
GeelongPort is the first port in Australia to be certified carbon neutral for its business operations under the Federal Government’s Climate Active initiative. KREA Consulting has a longstanding relationship with GeelongPort and was their Registered Consultant for their carbon neutral certification.
Located in Corio Bay, Victoria, GeelongPort is Victoria’s second largest port and handles close to 12 million tonnes of cargo and more than 600 vessel visits each year. In 2019, GeelongPort developed a 20 year environment strategy that presents a forward vision and commitment to the sustainable environmental management of port facilities.
KREA Consulting was initially engaged by GeelongPort in February 2020 to conduct a facilities water audit and prepare a base-year carbon inventory assessment of all GeelongPort operations. Following on from this assessment, a number of opportunities were recommended that would ultimately support GeelongPort’s environmental strategy targets. One significant recommendation was for GeelongPort to move towards Climate Active carbon neutral certification.
KREA Consulting has continued to work with GeelongPort throughout their carbon neutral certification process and was their Climate Active Registered Consultant for their submission. KREA Consulting provided full support with their application including preparation of the Climate Active carbon inventory and documentation, determination of project boundary, liaison with assurance auditors and support purchasing carbon offsets with co-benefits that align with their environmental strategy.
